亨廷顿氏舞蹈症(Huntington's disease HD)是一种神经退行性疾病,病发时会无法控制四肢,就像手舞足蹈一样。该疾病由美国医学家乔治·亨丁顿于1872年发现,因而得名。该病是由一个变异型亨廷顿基因引起,该基因可具有许多个氨基酸拷贝的蛋白质。正常的亨廷顿蛋白含有10-25段谷氨酰胺序列,但如果有36段以上的谷氨酰胺序列时,该蛋白质的形状即发生改变,并在神经元内形成大的丛群。这将杀灭大脑纹状体部位的这些细胞,从而导致特有的协调力丧失和痴呆症。
